Dementia Education and Empowerment Initiative

This initiave aims to advance understanding of dementia, increase knowledge and skills of caregivers and Direct Support Professionals, increase socialization in persons living with dementia and provide preventative strategies for those at risk of developing dementia.

The below programs are available to community members and direct support professionals at no cost, thanks to the support of the Administration of Community Living, Alzheimer’s Disease Programs Initiative award (HHS-2024-ACL-AOA-ADPI-0029).

Opening Minds Through Art

Dealing with Dementia

Prior art experience is NOT required! This award winning intergenerational art program is designed for people living with dementia who are paired with volunteers (students, families, caregivers) to spark the creative side of our personalities.  This is an in-person program offered at no cost.

 

Dealing with Dementia (DWD) is a no-cost, four-hour workshop, paired with the comprehensive Dealing with Dementia Guide, a detailed workbook designed to help caregivers. Participation in the Dealing with Dementia workshop is proven to increase dementia knowledge and confidence in the caregiver’s ability to provide care.
Dealing with Dementia deals with stress management and help caregivers understand the importance of – and prioritize – their own self-care.

6 Ways to Build Your Brain Health

A community workshop for reducing your risk for dementia

Simple lifestyle modifications can preserve your memory! Many risks for memory decline can be controlled. Learn how you can reduce your risk of cognitive decline practicing the six pillars of brain health.  This is an in-person six-week workshop where each pillar of brain health (exercise, nutrition, managing other medical conditions, sleep and relaxation, mental fitness, and social connection) will be discussed in more detail.

Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy

Better brain health for better aging.  Moneta Health provides an effective and easy to use use telephone based Cognitive Rehabilitiation Therapy (CBT) service designed to help you stay engaged in life and live independently for longer. CBT aims to improve cognitive function and daily life activities in individuals with mild cognitive impairment and dementia. It includes a 60-minute brain health evaluation with a licensed therapist, therapist, personalized intensive cognitive therapy and an ongoing preventaion maintenance program.

Learn the theory about what’s happening in the brain along with practical techniques so you not just survive but thrive as a care partner.  Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care’s mission is to transform the experience of dementia – worldwide for families, care communities, home care agencies and other organizations. PAC offers workable solutions, skills, and approaches to bring real hope, possibility, and significant shifts to your experience of dementia and dementia care.

An evidence-informed training for direct support professionals that provides an introduction to Dementia and Intellectual Disabilities to obtain a basic understanding of dementia/ID and care techniques and be able to create a dementia care plan.

What you’ll learn: What is dementia, types of dementia and stages, planning for impact of dementia, models for individual and group care, communication techniques, environmental adaptations, managing BPSDs, and creating a dementia care plan.

Memory Screening Training

Using the Brief Alzheimer’s Screening (BAS) tool

Receive training to provide free, community-based memory screenings at community health fairs, events and community-based service organizations.  These quick, noninvasive, confidential screenings, consisting of a series of questions and/or tasks which test cognitive functions, are an important tool to detect a potential memory problem.
