Diagnosis of Dementia

On-demand

June 25, 2020-7/1/2022

Course Overview:

Various disorders and factors contribute to the development of dementia. Neurodegenerative disorders result in a progressive and irreversible loss of neurons and brain functioning. Currently, there are no cures for these types of disorders. They include Alzheimer’s disease, Frontotemporal dementia, Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, and Mixed dementia. This course is designed to help practitioners distinguish mild cognitive impairment from dementia, identify common types of dementia and symptoms of each.

Redefining Alzheimer Disease

On-demand

7/24/2020 – 7/1/2022

Course Overview:

This course discusses the current understanding of neurodegenerative disorders, explores the unique clinical and neuropsychological characteristics of Alzheimer disease and addresses whether there is an identifiable prodromal stage in each condition.  This course will also identify the effective factors in managing mild cognitive impairment.

Differential Diagnosis of Dementia

On-demand

8/28/2020 – 7/1/2022

Course Overview:

Alzheimer’s disease accounts for up to 80 percent of all dementia cases. Diagnosis may be complicated by other forms of dementia that have symptoms and pathologies similar to Alzheimer’s disease. Knowing the key features and pathology of each type of dementia can help in the accurate diagnosis of patients. This course is designed to help practitioners identify prominent symptoms early in the disease process that strongly suggest non-Alzheimer dementia and conditions that may contribute dementia.

Treatment of Dementia

On-demand

9/25/2020 – 7/1/2022

Course Overview:

This course will examine pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments of dementia and their effect in the treatment of dementia. This course discusses phases of the disease process when specific treatments should be initiated.

Behavioral and Psychiatric Syndromes of Dementia

On-demand

10/23/2020 – 7/1/2022

Course Overview:

Behavioral and psychiatric symptoms are emerging as a significant contributor to this clinical heterogeneity. These symptoms have been linked to multiple areas of neurodegeneration, which may suggest that they are representative of network-wide dysfunction in the brain. Behavioral and psychiatric symptoms have been found in multiple studies to be related to disease severity and to contribute to disease progression over time.  This course will review questions to consider when planning treatment for behavioral symptoms in dementia.

Motor and Visuospatial Syndromes of Dementia

On-demand

11/20/2020 – 7/1/2022

Course Overview:

The principal features of subcortical dementia include bradyphrenia, impairment of executive function, recall abnormalities, visuospatial disturbances, depression, and apathy. The syndrome contrasts with dementia of the Alzheimer type in which cortical involvement produces aphasia, combined recall and recognition deficits, and indifference. This course is designed to help practitioners understand risk factors associated Alzheimer disease in those over the age of 60, define atypical dementia and posterior cortical atrophy.

Subjective Complaints of Dementia: Insight and Memory

On-demand

12/18/2020 – 7/1/2022

Course Overview:

This course is designed to help practitioners determine whether subjective memory complaints (SMCs) are associated with performance on objective cognitive measures and psychological factors in healthy, community-dwelling older adults. This course will also identify the symptoms and biomarkers of SCD.

Medical Issues that Contribute to Cognitive Impairment

On-demand

1/22/2022 – 7/1/2022

Course Overview:

One of the goals in evaluating a patient with dementia is to rule out reversible causes, for treatment of the underlying condition may result in a remarkable recovery for the patient. On the other hand, a patient with a treatable condition may derive some benefit from treatment but not be cured or have significant improvement. This course will review common “red flag” symptoms that may indicate non-neurological causes of cognitive decline, testing that may be helpful in distinguishing individuals with Alzheimer dementia from cognitive decline due to depression, and medications that have no effect on cognition.

The Importance of Non-neurologic Symptoms in Dementia Care

On-demand

2/26/2020 – 7/1/2022

Course Overview:

Treatment of Non-Neurologic Symptoms requires continuous and organic cooperation between patients, caregivers, social environments, and doctors. Therefore, it is important for neurologists, who mainly view NBSD for dementia patients, to increase their understanding of these more comprehensive areas as well as the latest insights and treatments to help patients and caregivers. This course is designed to help practitioners determine mental status changes due to medical illnesses and develop an understanding of the Beers Criteria in determining risk factors for elderly patients.

Missed Diagnosis – Lost Opportunities

On-demand

3/26/2020 – 7/1/2022

Course Overview:

Dementia is a growing public health problem for which early detection may be beneficial. Currently, the diagnosis of dementia in primary care is dependent mostly on clinical suspicion based on patient symptoms or caregivers’ concerns and is prone to be missed or delayed.  Ascertain the prevalence and contributing factors for missed and delayed dementia diagnoses in primary care.  This course is designed to help practitioners understand the prevalence of Alzheimer disease, factors that may impede diagnosis and considerations in disclosing a dementia diagnosis.

Incorporating a Dementia Strategy into your Practice

On-demand

4/23/2020 – 7/1/2022

Course Overview:

This course is designed to help practitioners understand the basics of billing for memory screening assessments and dementia care.  Learn how to incorporate preventive strategies focusing on dementia risk reduction in primary healthcare settings.
